Heartworms in Houston and Surrounding Areas.
π¨ Heartworm Disease Alert π¨
An Essential Guide for Pet Owners in Tomball, Spring, The Woodlands & Beyond
A Year-Round Threat in Our Neighborhood π
Here in Texas, our warm, humid climate means mosquitoes π¦βthe only carriers of heartworm diseaseβare active all year long. There is no “safe” season. For your dog, cat, puppy, or kitten, this means risk is constant. At Harmony Pet Clinic, we emphasize that year-round prevention isn’t just a suggestion; it’s vital for keeping your pet safe and healthy.

Infected Mosquito Bite is All It Takes
100%
Preventable With Our Help!
The Lifecycle of a Hidden Danger π«
- The Bite: π¦ Mosquito bites an infected animal (like a dog or coyote) and picks up baby heartworms.
- Incubation: Baby worms grow inside the mosquito for 10-14 days until they become infectious.
- Transmission: Infected mosquito bites YOUR pet οΏ½π± and passes the larvae onto their skin.
- Migration: Over 6-7 months, larvae travel to your pet’s heart and lungs, growing into adults.
- Damage: Adult worms cause severe, silent damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
Dogs πΆ vs. Cats π±
Heartworm disease is different in dogs and cats. Understanding this is key to protecting them.
- Dogs are natural hosts. Worms can grow into large numbers (hundreds!) and live for 5-7 years. Treatment is available but is very expensive, hard on your dog, and requires months of strict confinement.
- Cats are not natural hosts. Most worms don’t survive to adulthood, but even 1-2 worms can be fatal. There is NO cure for heartworm in cats, making prevention their only protection.
“But My Pet Stays Inside!” π
This is one of the most dangerous myths. Mosquitoes get inside easily through open doors and windows.
- Studies show that over 25% of cats diagnosed with heartworm are indoor-only. The risk is real, even for homebodies.
- Whether you need routine wellness care or have a sick pet, consistent prevention is the only way to guarantee safety for both indoor and outdoor pets.
