Important Notice: Rabies Vaccination is Required by Law

In accordance with Texas state law, all dogs and cats must have a current rabies vaccination. For the safety of our community, our staff, and other pets, Harmony Pet Clinic requires that all patients be up-to-date on their rabies vaccine.

The only accepted proof of vaccination is a valid Rabies Certificate.

What is Rabies? A Threat to Your Dog, Cat, Puppy, or Kitten

Rabies is a deadly but preventable viral disease that attacks the central nervous system of mammals, including dogs, cats, and humans. It is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. As your dedicated veterinarian in the Tomball and Spring area, we make rabies prevention a cornerstone of our wellness services for every puppy, kitten, and adult pet we see.

How is Rabies Transmitted to Pets?

The rabies virus is primarily transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, usually via a bite. An unvaccinated dog or cat that spends time outdoors in areas like Cypress or Magnolia is at a higher risk of encountering an infected animal.

Common Backyard Wildlife and Rabies Risk

While any mammal can get rabies, the main carriers in our part of Texas are wild animals that frequently visit suburban backyards. Be cautious of:

  • Bats
  • Raccoons
  • Skunks
  • Foxes

An important note on opossums: Contrary to popular belief, opossums very rarely carry or transmit rabies. Their naturally low body temperature makes it difficult for the rabies virus to survive. While they can be a nuisance in the yard, they are not considered a rabies threat.

Signs of Rabies in Animals

If you suspect an animal has rabies, do not approach it. Contact animal control immediately. Signs can vary but often include:

  • Sudden and severe behavioral changes (aggression, restlessness, or lethargy)
  • Excessive drooling or “foaming at the mouth”
  • Difficulty swallowing, which can look like the animal is choking
  • Paralysis, especially of the hind legs
  • Seizures or staggering
  • Unusual vocalization

4 Steps to Protect Your Pet & Family from Rabies

Vaccinate Pets

This is the single most important step. We provide rabies shots for dogs and cats as part of our comprehensive wellness care.

Supervise Pets

Keep your pets on a leash when walking and monitor them in yards to prevent unexpected encounters with wildlife.

Spay/Neuter

This helps control the stray animal population, reducing the overall risk of rabies transmission in our communities.

Report Strays

Report stray or ill animals to your local animal control. Do not attempt to handle or capture them yourself.

What To Do If Your Pet Is Bitten by Another Animal

If your pet is bitten or scratched by wildlife or an unknown domestic animal, it’s a potential emergency. Follow these steps:

  1. Consult Harmony Pet Clinic immediately. Even if your pet is up-to-date on its rabies vaccine, a booster shot and observation may be necessary. Call us at 832-307-3366 for urgent care guidance.
  2. Report the incident. Contact your local animal control agency, which serves Tomball, The Woodlands, and the surrounding areas. This is critical for public health.
  3. Provide vaccination records. The course of action will depend heavily on your pet’s vaccination history, which we maintain for all our patients.
