An Early Detection Guide for Dog & Cat Owners

Skin infections are common in pets, often starting as a minor issue before quickly escalating. Catching the signs early is the key to preventing pain, complications, and costly treatments. At Harmony Pet Clinic, we empower pet owners in Tomball, Spring, and surrounding areas to be proactive about their pet’s health.

Look, Listen, and Sniff: Your Pet Is Telling You Something

Eyes Icon Look for Changes in the Skin

Redness (Erythema): Any patch of skin that is pinker or redder than normal is a sign of inflammation.

Rashes or Bumps (Papules): Small, raised bumps, similar to pimples, are a classic sign of a bacterial infection (pyoderma).

Crusts and Scabs: These indicate oozing and self-trauma from scratching.

Hair Loss (Alopecia): Circular or patchy hair loss often accompanies infections.

Ear Icon Listen for Changes in Behavior

Increased Scratching/Licking: This is the most obvious sign of discomfort. If it’s persistent, it’s a problem.

Head Shaking: A primary sign of an ear infection, which is a very common type of skin infection.

Scooting: Dragging their rear on the ground can indicate infected or impacted anal glands.

Nose Icon Sniff for Changes in Odor

A healthy pet shouldn’t have a strong odor.

Musty or “Corn Chip” Smell: This is the hallmark scent of a yeast infection (Malassezia dermatitis), especially common in ears and skin folds.

Foul or Rotting Smell: A pungent, unpleasant odor often indicates a severe bacterial infection or a “hot spot” (acute moist dermatitis).

Warning Icon Why Early Detection is Critical

A minor surface infection can quickly burrow deeper into the skin, becoming a painful, widespread problem called cellulitis. What starts as a simple issue can lead to significant pain, systemic illness, and a much more intensive and expensive treatment plan. Acting fast saves your pet from suffering and saves you from stress.

Doctor Icon What To Do Immediately

If you notice any of these signs, take action.

1. Call Your Veterinarian: This is always the first and most important step. Do not wait for it to get worse.

2. Prevent Licking: Use a pet-safe recovery collar (e-collar) if needed to stop your pet from making the area worse.

3. Do NOT Use Human Products: Never apply human creams, antiseptics (like peroxide), or ointments, as they can be ineffective or toxic to pets.
