A Guide to a Common and Highly Contagious Fungal Infection
Discovering a skin lesion on your cat or kitten can be worrisome, especially when you hear the word “ringworm.” This common condition is often misunderstood. At Harmony Pet Clinic, we provide clear answers and effective treatment for pet owners in Tomball, Spring, Magnolia, The Woodlands, and Cypress.
Understanding Ringworm (Dermatophytosis)
What is Ringworm? It’s Not a Worm!
Despite its name, ringworm is a fungal infection, not a parasite. The fungus, called a dermatophyte, feeds on keratin, a protein found in skin, hair, and nails.
How it Spreads: Through direct contact with an infected animal or by touching contaminated objects (bedding, furniture, brushes). Spores can survive for over a year.
Symptoms to Watch For in Your Cat
Ringworm can look different on every cat, and some cats can be asymptomatic carriers.
Classic Signs: Circular, patchy areas of hair loss, especially on the head, ears, and paws. The skin may be scaly, crusty, or red.
Other Signs: Brittle hair or claws, excessive dandruff, or generalized redness. It may or may not be itchy.
Warning: Ringworm is Zoonotic
“Zoonotic” means it can be transmitted from animals to people. Children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are most at risk.
In People: It typically appears as a red, itchy, round rash with raised edges. If you or a family member develop a suspicious rash, consult your physician.
How to Prevent Spread and Decontaminate
Aggressive environmental cleaning is just as important as treating the pet.
1. Isolate: Keep the infected pet in a single, easy-to-clean room.
2. Clean Thoroughly: Vacuum daily. Wash all bedding, blankets, and toys in hot water.
3. Disinfect Surfaces: Use a 1:10 bleach solution or an approved veterinary disinfectant.
4. Wash Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling your infected pet.
IMMEDIATE VETERINARY CARE IS ESSENTIAL!
Do not wait. At the first sign of hair loss or any skin problem, schedule a veterinary appointment immediately.
Why? Self-diagnosing is impossible. Ringworm mimics many other skin conditions. Only a vet can confirm the diagnosis through tests. Prompt action prevents suffering and stops the spread.
